Itinerary

Day 1 Calgary

After checking into your hotel, the rest of the day is yours to tour Calgary. Both cosmopolitan and cowboy-rustic, Calgary offers many attractions, including Olympic Stadium (site of the 1988 Winter Olympics), Calgary Tower, the Glenbow Museum, the Calgary Zoo, Fort Calgary and Prince’s Island Park, located on the Bow River.

Day 2 Calgary to Banff

Learn about geology, native history and wildlife on your way to Banff, arriving early enough to give you plenty of time to explore this magical mountain resort. Tucked in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, natural wonders abound in every direction. You’ll ride aboard the Banff Gondola to the top of Sulphur Mountain (2,451 meters, 8,041 feet) for panoramic views of Banff and the surrounding Bow Valley.

Day 3 Banff to Lake Louise

Today you’ll explore Banff and Yoho National Parks. Starting in Banff, Canada’s oldest National Park, you’ll head west. You’ll then cross the Continental Divide and enter Yoho National Park for visits to Emerald Lake, Takakkaw Falls and the Kicking Horse River’s natural bridge. From Yoho you’ll head into Lake Louise and check into the Fairmont Chateau. The hotel’s lakeside perch gives you immediate access to one of the most photographed locations in the world.

Day 4 Lake Louise to Jasper

You’ll follow the Icefields Parkway north, one of the world’s most scenic drives. The route’s endless parade of snow-draped peaks and snowmelt fed streams and lakes, will make you feel like you’re starring in your own National Geographic special. The highlight of the day comes when you board an Ice Explorer bus and venture onto the Athabasca Glacier. This massive flow is part of the Columbia Icefield which covers 325 square kilometers (125 square miles). You’ll lodge in Jasper, another one of Canada’s famed mountain resort towns.

Days 5 and 6 Jasper to Vancouver

In the morning you’ll enjoy a nature tour of the Jasper area. In the afternoon (2:30pm) you’ll begin heading to the coast aboard a VIA Rail Canadian train. The route snakes through the Canadian Rockies, crossing the Continental Divide into British Columbia, and passing Mount Robson, the region’s highest peak at 3954 meters (12,972 feet). And then south, across an arid, hilly landscape into Kamloops along the Thompson River. From here the VIA Rail will continue into the Fraser River Valley and pass Hell’s Gate, a narrow canyon only 34 meters wide (112 feet). You’ll arrive in Vancouver in the morning, giving you ample time to explore Canada’s third largest city. You’ll be given a two day “Hop-on Hop-off” bus pass, allowing you to tour the city at your own pace. The bus visits all of Vancouver’s top attractions including Stanley Park, Gastown, Chinatown, the Robson Street Shopping District and stops near Granville Island.

Day 7 Vancouver

Your tour concludes upon checking out of your hotel. Thank you for travelling with CanadaRail.ca.
