Itinerary

Day 1 Calgary

After checking into your hotel, the rest of the day is yours to tour Calgary. Both cosmopolitan and cowboy-rustic, Calgary offers many attractions, including Olympic Plaza (site of the 1988 Winter Olympics), Calgary Tower, the Glenbow Museum, the Calgary Zoo, Fort Calgary and Prince’s Island Park, located on the Bow River.

Please note: Hotels in Calgary during the Stampede are based upon priority bookings. We are not able to guarantee room type until tour is booked.

Day 2 Calgary Stampede

Put on your cowboy boots and hat. This is truly an experience of a lifetime. The Calgary Stampede is a 10 day event that bills itself as “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth”. Included with your tour package are tickets to the world class rodeo, tickets to the evening grandstand show as well as your entrance into the park. Your Canada Rail Vacation’s representative will be on hand at the festival grounds to assist you with planning your day.

Day 3 Calgary to Banff

Spend the morning exploring life in Calgary during the Stampede. Rope Square is quite lively with square dancing. Many of our First Nations will be in the city during this time to showcase their talents. In the afternoon, transfer to Banff. Relax and settle in to your hotel for the next three nights.

Day 4 Banff Sightseeing

Take a 4.5 hour guided bus tour (with pickup at 8:00am) through the towering mountains of Rundle, Tunnel, Cascade, and Norquay and learn about the natural attractions of the wind-shaped hoodoos. Be aware of the Surprise Corner along Tunnel Mountain Drive! Learn all about how these majestic mountains have shaped this unique community before riding the Banff Gondola up Sulphur Mountain. Spend the rest of the afternoon exploring Banff on your own. You may enjoy walking on the local trails, playing golf at The Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course, or having extra leisure time in your hotel. Be sure to speak with our staff member Spencer if you wish to play this course, as he'll be glad to give you some course advice.

Day 5 Banff to Lake Louise, Mountain Lakes & Waterfalls Tour

Discover the beauty of Banff and Yoho National Parks and other landmarks. Enjoy hiking or simply appreciate spectacular mountain scenery. Your first stop is at Johnston Canyon where you have sufficient time to take a short nature walk to the lower falls. Continue to Moraine Lake and Lake Louise, often known as the “Jewel of the Rockies”. Cross the Great Divide, enter Yoho National Park and visit Takakkaw Falls, Kicking Horse Pass, Emerald Lake and the Natural Rock Bridge that spans across the Kicking Horse River. Return to Banff in the late afternoon after a spectacular day of sightseeing.

Day 6 Banff to Kamloops

You begin the rail portion of your vacation aboard a Rocky Mountaineer train. After exiting Banff, you’ll wind through the Canadian Rockies, passing Glacier National Park, Rogers Pass and the Spiral Tunnels, one of the world’s great engineering triumphs. After crossing the Continental Divide you’ll enter British Columbia. The landscape changes dramatically, becoming almost desert-like as you approach  Kamloops, located in the center of British Columbia’s  interior.

Day 7 Kamloops to Vancouver

You’ll continue west out of Kamloops along the Thompson River before dipping south into the Fraser River Valley. The combination of the Canadian Cascade Mountains and quick flowing Fraser River create a scenic backdrop. Along the way you’ll pass Hell’s Gate, the valley’s most famous landmark. You’ll arrive in Vancouver in the late afternoon, giving you plenty of time to explore Canada’s third largest city. A two-day “Hop-on, Hop-off” bus pass will allow you to tour at your own pace. The bus accesses all of Vancouver’s top attractions including Gastown, Stanley Park, Chinatown, Granville Island and the Robson Street Shopping District.

Day 8 Vancouver

Your tour ends upon checking out of your hotel.

This itinerary is also available in reverse on Sundays & Thursdays.
