Customizing Your Train Journey

Embarking on a train journey across Canada, you’ll find numerous opportunities to tailor the trip to your personal preferences and interests. From choosing your preferred train service and route, cabin class, or service level, to deciding what you want to see and do, or where you want to go, customizing your train journey gives you the flexibility to create an unforgettable travel experience.

To help start your planning, it may help to narrow down your choice by deciding on what type of train trip you want to take. In Canada, we have two unique train services to choose from: Rocky Mountaineer and VIA Rail.

Rocky Mountaineer and VIA Rail are two iconic train journeys that showcase the diverse and breathtaking landscapes of Canada. Each offering a unique experience, these railways traverse through some of the most scenic regions in the country, providing passengers with an immersive journey into Canada’s natural wonders. Rocky Mountaineer is renowned for its luxury travel, combining unparalleled comfort with panoramic views of the majestic Rocky Mountains. VIA Rail offers a more extensive network, connecting major cities and remote areas, allowing travellers to explore the vastness of Canada from coast to coast. Despite their differences, both Rocky Mountaineer and VIA Rail promise unforgettable train travel experiences that capture the essence of Canada’s awe-inspiring beauty.

Visit some of the most beautiful places Canada has to offer onboard the Rocky Mountaineer Train, VIA Rail Train, or both!

The choice between Rocky Mountaineer and VIA Rail ultimately lies in one’s preferences and priorities. Rocky Mountaineer offers an unparalleled luxury experience, combining breathtaking scenery with top-notch service, gourmet cuisine, and panoramic views from its glass-domed train cars. On the other hand, VIA Rail provides a more traditional and diverse travel experience, catering to a wider range of budgets and offering access to various destinations across Canada. Whether one seeks the epitome of elegance or a more nostalgic experience and an extensive rail network, both Rocky Mountaineer and VIA Rail promise unforgettable moments and an opportunity to explore the diverse beauty of Canada by rail.

Can't Decide Which Train is Right for You?

Take them both!
Many of our most popular tours involve taking the Rocky Mountaineer through the Rockies and connect with the VIA Rail trains going across the country.

Must Visit Parts of Canada

On your Custom Canada train tour, you’ll have the opportunity to explore as much of the country as you’d like as we can plan anything from a few days to a few months! Below, you’ll see some ideas for the must-visit parts of the country.

Starting from the East, you may wish to start your journey in Halifax, a city brimming with maritime history. You may want to witness the beauty of the Cabot Trail as the leaves change color in the fall, or the friendly charm of Acadian communities in Nova Scotia.

Next, you may want to visit Quebec City and Montreal. Known for its old-world charm, cobblestone streets, and French-Canadian culture, Quebec City is a must-see. Montreal, with its vibrant arts scene and unique blend of English and French influences also won’t disappoint.

Onto Ontario, where Toronto, Canada’s largest city, awaits. Don’t miss the iconic CN Tower, the bustling St. Lawrence Market, and the Royal Ontario Museum. An excursion to Niagara Falls is worth the detour.

Should you wish to take the VIA Rail Canadian train across the prairies, be ready to marvel at the vast, open landscapes. Your train then snakes through the stunning Canadian Rockies, with stops in Jasper, Lake Louise, and Banff. These places are renowned for their breathtaking mountain scenery, wildlife, and outdoor activities.

Ending in the West is Vancouver, a city that perfectly combines urban life with outdoor adventure. From Vancouver, you can also take an excursion to Victoria and see the world-famous Butchart Gardens, or go whale watching.

Each of these cities and towns has its unique charm and attractions. However, the real star of the show is the journey itself. The variety of landscapes, cultures, and experiences you’ll encounter on your Canada train tour is what truly makes it a trip of a lifetime.

Design Your Trip Around Your Favorite Activities

Work alongside one of our Tour Guides to plan each day’s adventure; avoid the large crowds, visit areas few other tourists get to see, or plan a day of activities that are of interest to you!

What else have we done for our clients?

Chase the Aurora Borealis in the Yukon? We’ve done it.

We work with a lovely little lodge just north of Whitehorse called Sun Dog Retreat. At the lodge, you’ll have your own private cabin in the woods. Our guides there will make sure you learn everything about the north, hear some stories, see some animals and watch for the Aurora.

Heli-ski in the Purcell Mountains? We live down the street!

We literally lived down the street. Most of our staff have lived and worked in Panorama, BC. This is where we all go on vacation. RK. Heliski is right there. We’ve shuttled many guests over the years to this heli ski operation who are celebrating over 50 years in business. Panorama Resort will be worth staying for a few nights. In the winter, there’s plenty of skiing or snowmobiling with Toby Creek Adventures. In the summer, Greywolf Golf Course, one of Canada’s top golf courses is there to enjoy too.

Ride every train in Canada? We’ve made it happen too.

We had a guest contact us in 2012 saying she wanted to ride every possible passenger train in Canada. We made this happen. Our guest started her five week train journey out east. We had so much fun putting this trip together, our company owners Heather and Martin went up to Jasper and rode the final three days with her. It was literally a trip of a lifetime.

Cycle the Canadian Rockies? Hint – a tour is being created.

Our company owner Martin Flanagan has ridden with, and is friends with, ex-pro cyclist Tyler Hamilton. We know Martin and Tyler are working on a tour of the Rockies together. Ride the Rocky Mountaineer train in style from Vancouver to Jasper. Then ride bikes on a fully guided tour with Martin and Tyler as your guides.

Interested in a photography tour of Western Canada? We know some pros.

We love to recommend and arrange photography experiences that showcase the beauty of Western Canada. With expertise in guiding through iconic locations, our partners have even joined us aboard the Rocky Mountaineer. Many of the stunning photos on our website reflect these collaborations. They’re in high demand, so early booking is recommended, and we’d be delighted to organize a special photography tour for you.

Have a special interest group who want to come to Canada? We’d love to work with you.

We’ve hosted everything from bird watchers to police and firefighter groups to sports teams. Maybe you’d like to come run the Calgary Marathon with a group and then ride the train or perhaps your curling team needs a ride across Canada, everything is possible.

Is your business looking for a place to hold a meeting? We’ve hosted business meetings on board the trains.

There are two very special train cars that can be added on to the train. Perfect for board meetings, these lounge cars can be set up for groups to sit together.
